A few years ago everyone was buying land in Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama to mention just a few of the hotspots and while the beachfront retirement idea was in full swing and there was no limit to the amount of credit you could get, it became a game that everyone could play.

Unfortunately those days are over, but that doesn´t mean that you can´t find a bargain in beachfront properties abroad as many of those retirees are back in the States trying to make ends meet again and their properties are been sold off like hot cakes to anyone with a little bit of cash.

Before you head off to see if there is anything there to buy for a steal, you have to consider what that property is worth, not just right now but in the future.  While a lot of properties were built with the intention of being part of a growing community which would in due course have certain facilities as the population grew, there is a pretty good chance now that that population is on the decline and that some services may never be created.  The property value in the future, as a result of this, may never be what it was advertised to become.

Baby boomers, who are those people born a year or two after the end of World War II, are a force to contend with as far as numbers are concerned and they are also considered to be the very last generation that will retire with decent pensions in hand, but as the crash has shown, this hasn´t made them immune to the economic downturn and while many have managed to stay put, there are a vast number who have left their homes and condos and had to return to the US.

The best place to find these types of properties is to look through sites such as Craigslist which allows owners to advertise directly and cut out the middle man.  If you are looking for a long term investment or a lifestyle change, then taking on one of these bargains could be the bargain of a lifetime.
